Makhana, also known as fox nut or gorgon nut, is the edible seed of the aquatic plant Euryale ferox. It is widely cultivated in India and is valued for its nutritional, medicinal, and commercial importance.

Bihar is the leading producer of Makhana in India. Cultivation is also expanding in states such as Assam, West Bengal, Manipur, and Tripura.

Makhana has a low glycemic index and is often included in balanced diets. However, individuals with diabetes should consult a healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes.

Makhana grows well in ponds, wetlands, and low-lying waterlogged fields with adequate water depth and fertile soil.

The crop generally requires 8–10 months from sowing to harvesting.
